In the summer of 1956, a twelve year-old African-American boy named Lincoln South makes a Greyhound bus trip from Little Rock to Atlanta to visit his grandmother. During the journey, he befriends two fellow passengers a big-talking black teenager named Jeff Twilley and an old Austrian émigré named Franz Jabing. Lincoln is not sure he likes or trusts Twilley, but Jabing is friendly and easygoing, and they soon become friends. However, Jabing has a secret. He is on a mission to return stolen items to a young woman whose family perished in the Holocaust. He is also being chased by a hired killer out to stop him at all costs. Lincoln eventually learns of this, and finds himself caught up in a dangerous game of hide and seek. With the unlikely help of the teenager Twilley, and his own unusual courage, the boy becomes the old Austrian's messenger and the only chance the young woman has to recover what is rightfully hers.

This is a story every American should read. The author does a superb job of describing the prejudice and discrimination imposed upon innocent victims by our justice system and our society in the aftermath of World War II. The reader relives the invasion of privacy of suspected Communists and daily degradation of minorities that hindered our country's progress during the mid-twentieth century.Twelve-year-old Lincoln South boards a bus travelling from Little Rock, Arkansas to Atlanta, Georgia in 1956. Lincoln takes one of the seats reserved for African-Americans in the back of the bus. Lincoln is a sharp lad with keen intuition, whose mother has instilled a strong sense of right and wrong. Two key players in the story join Lincoln in the back rows. One is an arrogant, flashy young man running from the law and looking for trouble. The other is a quiet, reserved foreigner on a mission to right a wrong administered by the Nazi Party during the war. The foreign stranger attempts to return stolen goods to the rightful owner and realizes that he is being followed by a hired killer. Both men trust Lincoln, befriend, and involve him in their problems. Lincoln's involvement with these men makes him the messenger that will change future generations.
This is a very well-written story that reads like a masterpiece. It is an informative look at life in America during the mid-1950s.

The Little Rock Messenger edition by Robert Ryland Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
In the spirit of full disclosure I must tell you that this book is written by my brother-in-law, the husband of my sister. This is the first published novel that I have read where I know the author very well, and my main concern was "What if I don't like the book, what will I say?" Well, in this case, not to worry. The opening chapter hooked me immediately and held my attention all the way to the end.
The characters that populate the story are people you really care about, don't trust, dislike, understand, despise and root for. The main theme of the story is justice, long overdue, but that makes it all the more compelling. A secondary theme is Jim Crow and ethnic prejudice in this book the victims are blacks and Jews. It is the summer of 1956, when America was just beginning to hear about a man named Martin Luther King, Jr., well before the civil rights movement got moving, and some ten years after the holocaust. These two historical tradegies merge in a bus ride from Little Rock to Atlanta, covering a three day period and bring out the worst and best in humanity.
Being young and black in the 1950s was a test of patience and courage. In this story, the main character has both qualities, plus a strong moral code. I really enjoyed the pace and suspense of this narrative and the strong parallels between racial prejudice and Jewish anti-semitism that comes through in the story. I couldn't put the book down. I highly recommend for anyone interested in a thrilling narrative and an interest in the mood and black & white settng of 1950s America.
A masterful story teller, Robert Ryland weaves together a novel full of mystery, intrique and suspense while capturing the essence of the segregated south. Truly, a must read for everyone. A great history lesson and should be on every high school english teacher's required reading list. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Ryland's other works.
I really enjoyed this book. the story was unique and the characters were well drawn. I really didn't want to put it down once i started. There were historical references that were interesting and it gave the reader a picture of race relations in the 1950's, of post WWII/start of cold war atmosphere. I highly recommend it.
Oh My Gosh. Fell in love with Lincoln!! Now then.......
This is a great read. Bits of Civil Rights history sprinkled in and a great read on how different perspectives were between those who experienced the era. I don't want to recap the story. Just read the book. I had a hard time finding a good stopping point. This would make a great television movie.
This novel is a perfect example of the absolute gems to be found in the blogs, in this case KINDLE NATION DAILY. I would not have become aware of this free(as in gratis, no cost, $0.00 dollars)crackerjack thriller if I didn't subscribe. Like Paul Gallico's brilliant novel, THE BOY WHO INVENTED THE BUBBLE GUN, this fine novel has as it's protagonist a young boy who seemingly comes of age during a single bus ride. The author somehow manages to bridge a gap between Europe in World War II and the American South during the civil rights upheaval of the the 1960's. And the formula works splendidly. From the get-go the author has a difficult task keeping a whirlwind plot moving while providing background information on the many disparate characters involved in the race to reach Atlanta. In the hands of this talented author it not only works, but it is a novel that kept me reading at the edge of my seat right until the very end. NOTE as well as being a terrific thriller, this is a terrific novel for young adult readers to learn a few things about America's past during the civil rights era and before....
This book was offered for free nearly a year ago and it just now made its way to the top of my TBR list! Had I only know how riveting the story would be I would have read it much sooner.
That said, the story is written about a place in time and space that I have no first hand knowledge of other than what I have read. While the story is told over the course of only a few days, it covers a lot of territory; namely knowing your place on many levels. If you're looking for a look at the good old days (and just how bad those days really were) this is a great book. It will make you appreciate just how far as a society we have come (not saying that it's far enough just that we made some movement) and hopefully serve as a reminder that each one of us individually can make a difference. Perhaps not in a large way or a heroic way but a difference all the same.
An extra added bonus, the book was well-formatted although there were some unintentional run-on words. Overall great formatting and no serious grammar or spelling errors! Yay!
