It's a very useful book, though not as good as I'd hoped. Based on the other books by the same author, I was hoping for more information. The information is good, and the step-by-steps are good as usual, it's just less informative than his drawing books.Product details

As the natural successor to the award winning Fundamentals of Drawing, this book on the Fundamentals of Painting improves upon it in a series of ways, mainly in its size (roughly 20% bigger), but also in its English translation. It does however leave a few things out from the previous one which, without hindering the overall quality of the final product, could have increased the value of the book.
The outline and structure is basically the same. The purpose of the book is laid out for the reader in a clear and objective way, and step-by-step processes are described on each of the books exercises, which are a head portrait, a portrait with hands, a nude figure and an old master copy.
These examples always come accompanied with master paintings of different periods and styles, effectively showing how artists throughout the ages solved the same problems in composition, structure, color, etc. I cannot at this moment attest to the quality (resolution) of these images as I do not yet possess the physical book, however the PDF version, which its main purpose is to provide the international reader with a way to understand the teacher's methods, has had its images greatly improved. I can only imagine the quality of the physical book will have suffered the same improved treatment.
There are two things missing from the previous book, which I mentioned before as slightly disappointing. The "Commom mistake" tips present on almost every page of the Fundamentals of Drawing are missing. These tips were generally right on target , stressing the most important aspects of each step and helping reinforce the idea or concept to be taught in a single, memorable phrase.
The second is the lack of an image library for the student in the end, which expanded upon the images accompanying and introducing each chapter. While this book does have more images than the Fundamentals of Drawing, with an excllent selection ranging from several Holbein portraits to Titian and an assortment of Russian masters, it would have been nice, if possible, to provide the student with even more images to expand and enrich his library of examples to study from, extending also the lifespan of the book itself as a tool for learning.
It should be noted that this book is not a "Methods and Materials" handbook, and isn't a complete guide to beginners on how to paint. It doesn't contain in-depth instructions on how to stretch a canvas or how to prepare a tempera paint. As with the Fundamentals of Drawing, it serves to fill a gap in the painting instruction manuals, while also bringing fresh new insights from the Russian academy on painting basics such as color relationships, light and shade, etc. There are many books on materials and technique out there, but few that tackle the actual process of painting in a clear and practical manner. This is an indispensable tool for the beginner artist, who many times may find himself lost in how to approach a painting.
I believe this book successfully achieves its goal to give the fundamentals of the painting process to the beginner student, in the most practical way possible. Again, not a single page is wasted here, putting the reader right into the practice of painting from the beginning. In a sense, it's closer to the treatises of the past, like Cennino Cennini's or Leonardo's than the bulk of books on painting on the shelves today.

Oh if only i waited a year for the english edition to be printed. However the PDF translation is invaluable to the serious student of time-tested processes and techniques.
It is an interesting book on the Russian approach to painting. The use of language is different from what Western approach is. So it takes a little getting use to. If you are interested in how the Russian academy approaches painting. It is an excellent book.
